Embracing the Challenge of a New Field

The Toyobo Group entered the bio business in the 1940s. Toyobo was then involved in producing pulp as a raw material for rayon. Yeast which was discovered in the pulp production waste water was researched for processing pulp waste water. This yeast research became the trigger for Toyobo's biotechnology business. Toyobo subsequently suspended its yeast-related business, but recognized the potential of the enzyme uricase, which breaks down uric acid, and pursued its research. "At that time, we were trying to advance into the biotechnology field as a new business outside the field of textiles. We needed some kind of a biotech product for market entry." - Hattori and Masuoka

As a result of this enzyme research, Toyobo released the uric acid diagnostic reagent "Uricolor-400" in 1978. That was a small but solid step for Toyobo's entry into the life sciences field. Then in 1982 Toyobo began marketing life science reagents for academic researchers using enzyme technologies. Today, Toyobo is releasing not only diagnostic reagents and enzymes for diagnostic reagents, but also diagnostics instruments one after another.
